Erechim is a municipality in the state of Rio Grande do Sul, in the South Region of Brazil. Considered a sub-regional centre in the country, it is the hub city of the Alto Uruguai gaúcho region and the second most populous city in the north of the state, with an estimated 105,705 inhabitants (IBGE/2022). According to the Socioeconomic Development Index (IDESE), it is the second most developed city in Rio Grande do Sul among municipalities with more than one hundred thousand inhabitants, leading in the education segment. According to the Atlas of Violence, it is the second safest municipality in the state. In 2015 the municipality ranked 15th in GDP in the state of Rio Grande do Sul.
It is one of the first planned modern cities in Brazil. Its road layout was inspired by urban concepts used in the layouts of Washington (1791), Paris (1850), Buenos Aires (1580) and Belo Horizonte (1897), but it was recently altered to facilitate traffic flow, characterised by very wide streets, strong hierarchy and the creation, through diagonal streets across the basic grid, of convergence points. Key elements of its layout include a perpendicular network of streets crossed by diagonal avenues, blocks of regular dimensions and an avenue around its perimeter.
