Rio de Janeiro, simply referred to as Rio, is the capital of the Brazilian state of Rio de Janeiro. One of the largest international tourist destinations in Brazil, in Latin America and also in the Southern Hemisphere, it is one of the country's first cities. It is the second largest metropolis in Brazil (after São Paulo), the seventh largest in the Americas and the eighteenth largest in the world. Its population according to the 2022 IBGE census was 6,211,223 inhabitants. It bears the epithet “Marvelous City”, and those born there are called cariocas.

Classified as a metropolis, it exerts national influence, whether cultural, economic or political, and it is one of the country's main economic, cultural and financial centers. It is internationally known for many cultural and landscape icons, such as Sugarloaf Mountain, Corcovado with the statue of Christ the Redeemer, the beaches of the neighborhoods of Copacabana, Ipanema and Barra da Tijuca, among others; the Maracanã and Nilton Santos stadiums; the bohemian neighborhood of Lapa and its arches; the Municipal Theatre of Rio de Janeiro; the Tijuca and Pedra Branca forests; the Quinta da Boa Vista; the National Library; Paquetá Island; the New Year's Eve celebration in Copacabana; the Rio carnival; and bossa nova and samba. Part of the city was designated a World Heritage Site by UNESCO on 1 July 2012.
