Teresina is a Brazilian municipality and the capital of the state of Piauí. It is the only state capital in the Northeast Region that is not on the coast, 343 km from the Atlantic Ocean. Its population, according to the 2022 Census of the IBGE, was 866,300 inhabitants, making it the most populous city in Piauí. It is conurbated with the Maranhão city of Timon, forming the Integrated Development Region of Greater Teresina, which has 1,250,488 inhabitants and is the second most populous of the three RIDEs in Brazil, behind only Brasília. Teresina is the 19th most populous city in Brazil and the 16th largest state capital by population; it is the 6th most populous capital in the Northeast and has the 8th largest GDP in the region. Nationally, it ranks 49th among municipalities by GDP.
Historically, Teresina developed through the Parnaíba River, by means of river navigation. Being the first planned capital in Brazil, it arose to replace the then capital, Oeiras, which, isolated in the central region of Piauí, could not withstand the commercial and industrial influence of the city of Caxias, in the neighbouring state of Maranhão, over much of the western part of the state. It is known as the Green City, a nickname given by the Maranhão writer Coelho Neto because of its streets and avenues lined with trees, as well as its large green areas.
